Youth unemployment in South Africa is as high as 63% under 35 years old and our students need to be prepared to work as freelancers or design entrepreneurs. Students receive an allowance of 5000 South African Rand (250 Euro) to develop a product and market it for a profit. It is the last project of their 4th year education and takes place over a period of 12 weeks. They need to consider and apply all their learnings to date and respond with a responsible design practice for useful products that do not harm people. In the design development process, they need to negotiate any outsourcing and manufacturing that may be required and organize themselves the marketing and sales of the product.
