At the University of the Arts London workshop we organized a workshop with design program leaders across the university to take the competency matrix for a test ride. In this workshop we validated the practical application of the methodology in the design of both graduate and undergraduate design degrees.
Exploring the Methodology
We first provided the program course leaders with an empty competency matrix and asked them to create a competency ‘self-portrait’ of the programs they were leading. The visual constraints of the map stimulated participants to elicit the higher-level program learning outcomes.
Charting Learning Pathways
Once program leaders had a grasp on their program competencies we presented them with visual and tangible stimuli to think hands on about the progression of a student learning design, and the different pathways or profiles that could be imagined.
